How to Prep Your Skin for a Wax Appointment

You booked your appointment — great! But what you do in the days leading up to it matters just as much as what happens in the treatment room. A little preparation goes a long way toward smoother results, less discomfort, and healthier skin. Here's exactly how to get ready before you come in.

Let Your Hair Grow to the Right Length. This is the most important step. Hair needs to be at least ¼ inch long — roughly the length of a grain of rice — for the wax to grip it properly. That's about 2–3 weeks of growth after shaving. If your hair is too short, the wax won't be able to grab it and you'll end up with patchy results or missed spots. If it's too long (over ½ inch), consider trimming it slightly so the process is more comfortable. The sweet spot is 2–3 weeks of growth with no shaving in between.

Exfoliate 24–48 Hours Before Your Appointment. Gentle exfoliation before your wax helps remove dead skin cells that can trap hairs beneath the surface. When those cells are cleared away, the wax can grip the hair more effectively — which means cleaner removal and fewer ingrown hairs afterward. Use a gentle scrub or exfoliating mitt the day before your appointment. Avoid exfoliating the same day, as freshly exfoliated skin can be more sensitive. Skip this step if you have any active irritation, sunburn, or broken skin in the area.

Keep Your Skin Moisturized — But Not on Appointment Day. Hydrated skin waxes better. In the days leading up to your appointment, keep your skin moisturized with a fragrance-free lotion. Well-hydrated skin is more supple, which means hair releases more cleanly from the follicle. However, on the day of your appointment, skip the lotion, oils, and heavy creams on the area being waxed. Product buildup creates a barrier between the wax and the hair, reducing how well it adheres. The rule: moisturize daily leading up to your appointment, but come in with clean, product-free skin on the day.

Avoid Sun Exposure and Tanning. Sunburned or freshly tanned skin is more sensitive and prone to irritation during waxing. If you've spent time in the sun, wait at least 24–48 hours before your appointment to let your skin calm down. This applies to spray tans too — waxing can lift or streak a fresh spray tan, so schedule your wax before your tan, not after.

Skip Retinol and Exfoliating Acids. If you use retinol, AHAs (like glycolic acid), or BHAs (like salicylic acid) in your skincare routine, pause them for at least 48–72 hours before your wax. These ingredients thin and sensitize the skin, which can make waxing more uncomfortable and increase the risk of lifting or irritation. When in doubt, mention any skincare products you're using when you book — I'm happy to advise.

Stay Hydrated and Avoid Caffeine. Drinking plenty of water in the days before your appointment keeps your skin in good condition from the inside out. On the day of your wax, try to avoid caffeine — it can temporarily make skin more sensitive and reactive.

Wear Loose, Comfortable Clothing. After your wax, your skin will be freshly treated and slightly sensitive. Tight clothing can cause friction and irritation on freshly waxed areas. Wear loose, breathable fabrics — especially for Brazilian or leg waxing — so your skin can breathe after your appointment.

Don't Wax Over Irritated or Broken Skin. If you have a rash, active breakout, cuts, or any skin irritation in the area to be waxed, it's best to reschedule. Waxing over compromised skin can worsen irritation and slow healing. Your skin's health always comes first.

When you arrive, your skin will be cleansed before waxing begins. I use high-quality hard wax for sensitive areas, which is gentler on the skin and grips the hair — not the skin — for a more comfortable experience. After your wax, I'll apply a soothing post-wax treatment to calm the skin and minimize redness, and walk you through aftercare so you know exactly how to care for your skin in the hours and days that follow.

Prepping your skin properly makes a real difference in your results. Follow these steps and you'll walk out feeling smooth, confident, and comfortable. Ready to schedule your appointment? Visit the contact page or reach out directly — I'd love to see you in the studio.
